The Galveias Palace, which now houses the City Central Library of Lisbon, is one of the finest examples of a Portuguese noble house from the seventeenth-century. Built in the mid-seventeenth century as a country house for the Marquis of Távora, it remained in the family until 1759 when the famous Távora affair occurred and the property was confiscated by the state. In 1801, it was bought by João de Almeida de Melo e Castro, 5th Count of Galveias, and from then on known as Palace of Galveias.
In 1928, it was acquired by the Lisbon City Council and later transformed into a municipal library. It has recently undergone renovation work and expansion. During the summer months, the palace garden, where there is a kiosk and a terrace, is host to various cultural activities.
