Located at latitude 38º 47' North and longitude 9º 30' West, Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of continental Europe. Luís de Camões described it in 'Os Lusíadas’ as the place "where the land ends and the sea begins". Integrated in the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, it is a must visit for those touring the area for its symbolism and also the panoramic view it offers. In addition to the lighthouse that remains an important landmark for navigation, historical records point to the existence in the seventeenth century, of a stronghold at this location with an important role in the surveillance of the sea access to Lisbon.
