The Bones Chapel is one of the best-known monuments of Évora for its somewhat peculiar features... Located in the Church of São Francisco it was built in the seventeenth century to convey the message of the transience of life. At the entrance welcomes us a warning: "We bones that here lay welcome yours here to stay." Inside the walls and pillars are covered with the skulls and bones of 5000 monks that once lived. At the very least, impressive!
Every day from 9h-12h45 & 14h30-17h30; Sun. opens at 10h.
