Founded in 1153, it is the first and largest entirely Gothic building in the country. It is where the remains of King D. Pedro I and D.ª Inês de Castro lie, the protagonists of the greatest Portuguese love story, told in verse by the poet Luís de Camões. Many couples visit the monastery on their weeding anniversary to renew their vows of eternal love. The legend says that, in his will, King D. Pedro decided to be buried in a tomb in front of D.ª Inés, so that when the couple rises again in the judgment day, the first thing they’ll do is to look into each other’s eyes.
