Not far from the historic centre, the Regaleira Palace was built between 1904 and 1910, the last period of the monarchy. It is a magical and unique place, surrounded by lush gardens and buildings of extravagant architecture and enigmatic symbolism, as the palace, the chapel, the towers and wells. All you’ll see is the result of the owner’s imagination coming true, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, together with the talent of the Italian architect and scenographer Luigi Manini. A man of scientific spirit, vast culture and rare sensibility, renowned bibliophile, criterions collector and great philanthropist, Monteiro printed on stone a book of a cosmological vision, a synthesis of the spiritual memory of humanity, whose roots plunge in the Portuguese and universal mythical tradition. The architecture of the palace, chapel and other buildings were scenically designed in the context of an Edenic garden, with dominance of neo-Manueline and Renaissance styles. In turn, the garden, a representation of the microcosm, is revealed by the succession of places imbued with magic and mystery. The visit is mandatory.
